The more I read and hear people in Hamilton discuss traffic congestion the more amazed I am. Downtown Hamilton does not have gridlock, at all, at any time. The traffic moves exceptionally fast downtown during the height of what you refer to as rush hour, maybe a 30-60 minute period each weekday, and even faster at any other time of day.

For all of those people who complain about traffic in this city I implore you to spend some time in cities with real traffic congestion. Montreal, where I have lived, is known for vibrant street life and successful shops and restaurants along the major arteries of Sherbrooke, St-Denis, Ste-Catherine and St-Laurent. None of these streets can be traversed any where near as fast you can get move along Main or King in Hamilton. That's the trade off. You really can't have both.

Hamilton needs to ask itself if it wants to have a healthy downtown with life and mix use or the ghost town it has today. This city is home to 500k+ people and most nights you could hear a pin drop downtown after dark. Go to a European city of even half the size and you will see a city centre crawling with people.

If you just want to get in, out or through downtown using your car as fast as possible then just say so and stop pretending everything is fine.
