I agree - context is important. I stood at King and Locke yesterday (Tuesday, October 1) at 5pm waiting to cross. It was a great chance to observe traffic on King during peak rush hour. Traffic was moving forward well, not racing like at less busy times of the day, but moving consistently at 30-40km/h (my best guess). As someone who grew up travelling on Bloor and Queen West in Toronto (two streets I think we would do well to emulate based on the vibrancy of businesses and community activity around them), King was beginning to approximate the flow of traffic there - albeit still much faster, smoother and with no one 'left behind' at lights (stuck for more than one cycle). What was missing, relative to those Toronto streets, was tons of pedestrians and a consistent mix of cyclists. As we continue to convert streets to more 'complete' designs, that should improve, along with the health of businesses along the way. The bus lane is not the barrier to success - it's the first step towards imaging something different, something better.
