Open Thread: Letters To Bernie Morelli

By Adrian Duyzer
Published September 21, 2010

The news that the Pearl Company is closing due to ongoing threats, harassment and charges under Hamilton's bylaws is beyond disappointing. It's outrageous.

I think Bernie Morelli, Councillor for Ward 3, should know how we feel about this. Morelli's opinion on the situation is that "there is a process that you have to go through" that "works in most cases".

It's not working in this case, and blaming a process is no excuse. I'd like to know what Morelli is doing to fix this situation and how quickly he's going to get it done.

Perhaps you have some comments of your own. Contact Morelli at bmorelli@hamilton.ca and put your letter in the comments below.

Dear Councillor Morelli,

I am truly saddened to read the the Pearl Company will close, as reported in the Hamilton Spectator.

The Spectator reports your stance on the issue as follows: "Like anything else of this kind, there is a process that you have to go through. Sure it can be frustrating, but you must work through it, follow it. It works in most cases."

To me, that stance can be summed up simply: don't do anything to help, and when bad things happen, blame it on a "process" over which you have no control.

That's simply unacceptable. This is not a process, this is a travesty. As councillor for Ward 3, your first responsibility was to ensure that the Pearl Company succeeded, your second responsibility was to ensure that failure was not forced on them, and your third, now, is to be loudly and firmly stating that this is a broken process that needs to be fixed and fixed now, not defending it by saying that "it works in most cases"!

"Works in most cases" is not acceptable when we face a tragic cultural loss to your ward and to the city as a whole.

"Works in most cases" is not acceptable when good, hard-working citizens put dreams into action and make real change happen and then are shot down by absurd bureaucratic processes.

Councillor Morelli: how are you going to fix this problem, and how quickly are you going to get it done?

Sincerely,

Adrian Duyzer

Dear Bernie Morelli:

The only reason I had to go to your ward in the last 4 years was the Pearl Company Theatre. Nothing else has materialized during your last 4 or 5 terms on council that's worth a 5 minute ride from the comfort and amenities of downtown. And that's a shame, because there are some fine neighbourhoods and fine people east of Wellington Street who deserve better.

I may pay one last visit though - and I'm seriously considering it. I could get a place in one of the many illegal rooming houses in the area for the month of October and change my address. This would allow me to register as a Ward 3 resident and vote for Paul Tetley, someone who has demonstrated a true passion for the neighbourhood and an understanding of what works for this part of the city. Because your comments regarding the Pearl Company make it obvious that you just don't get it.

Dear Bernie Morelli:

Keep up the good work. Apply the rules evenly and while everybody won't be happy at least you are doing your job properly.

I would like to send Bernie an email, but I doubt he would get it because my understanding is that he can't use a computer and someone screens and reads his email to him.

He probably yells at the computer screen like he yells to people on the phone.

Mr Dalton,

If you hate ward 3 so much, please do not come back.

Your comment and attitude is an insult to every one in ward 3.

FYI, whatever opinion you may have of Bernie, it would be incorrect to state that he doesn't personally answer emails or phone calls from his constituents.

I've personally sent 2 emails and recieved 1 return phone call from the councillor as well as 2 responses in email form within 1 week of sending the messages. Maybe he doesn't do this for all who contact him, I don't know, I just know that he has responded too my concerns just fine.

With that being said, my vote this election will still not be for him. We need a change in Ward 3 and I think Paul Tetley is just what we're looking for.

I wouldn't be insulted if someone wrote that about me.

I lived in Ward 3 from 2000 to early 2010. Whether I agreed or disagreed with Bernie (which happened frequently) he always returned calls promptly and listened to my issues and usually fixed the problem. If it involved something with city staff I got a call the very next day from City Hall. I do not always agree with Bernie (especially some of his work on the police services board) but I cannot criticize him on the way he looks after the people who live in his ward. Businesses owners in his ward may have a different opinion but the residents are very well attended to, even if they don't like the outcome or agree with Bernie.

Dear Councillor Morelli,

I take it that in the 20 years you have been representing Ward 3 you have never been required to use judgment, common sense, or creativity in dealing with a by-law-based issue?

Everything has a process, including innovative thinking. It's still a process, just harder to define than the one-size-fits-all-no-matter-the-context process you seem to favour.

Perhaps you, or your staff writer and computer user, would be so kind as to help the rest of us understand the "facts" which have led to your current position related to the Pearl Company?

A phone call is a nice personal touch, but of course it's never on the record. Just saying.

You so misunderstood what I said. I had to point out the relative lack of amenities in a semi-downtown area that should be full of all kind of establishments bringing business from all over the city. Sorry if that offended you. If you like ward 3 as it is and want it to stay the same, don't bitch at me, just vote Morelli again.

I moved into Ward 3 about a year ago, and I definitely won't be voting for Mr. Morelli in the upcoming election. It's time for change and I'm for Paul Tetley...thing is, how do you convince the dozens upon dozens of seniors in the community who love themselves some sweet old Bernie?!?!?

Either way, the man's gotta go...

Jonathan,

I think your passion and absolute conviction on this discussion comes across as hostility when viewed instead of heard. I also found some responses to my posts harsh just because we have different views. I think you have well thought out positions on what's going on and you bring up some very good solutions on the other threads (permit parking). I have also found that when you don't react with pure passion but present an argument you have a powerful voice and a logic that has to be listened to.

I hope you don't find this preachy or condescending, that is far from my intent.

Dear Councillor,

Thanks for your email response. You must work hard, the work of two people by my estimate as the response came from your assistant Nick Westoll's email account, but I know it had to be from you because it had your signature at the bottom.

The fact that you tried to recall it (hint: that has never really worked with Microsoft Exchange), shows what a stand up guy you really are for not wanting to embarrass Nick while he was slacking off somewhere.

Sarcastically yours,

TrueBeliever

You have a point. Most of my posts are more well tempered than the ones on this issue.

Perhaps that's your opinion, but when you're white, you're white, but when you're right, you're right. Bazzinga!! :D

Mr Morelli, I just received your postcard and want to address each of your points.

• Preservation of our neighbourhood environment. No thank you. I want my neighbourhood to improve. I’m tired of drug dealers and prostitutes. Really tired, and so are my neighbours. I recall you said at a meeting that prostitution is not illegal, and we should lobby our MP. Do you really expect me to believe that nothing can be done about it at the city level? I’m sick of children having to walk by the illegal social clubs that line the major streets. Shouldn’t they be looked after with proper bylaw enforcement?

• Proactive property standards enforcement. Mr. Morelli, my neighbours and I were laughing about the identical letter you sent to each of us complimenting us on the improvements we each had done on our property. Even the neighbour with a ton of garbage on his front porch for the 2 last years got one. On your way to city hall each morning as you drive along King St, do you not notice the trash bags sitting on the sidewalk for days on end, or the graffiti, or the discarded mattresses and furniture, or the weeds growing vigorously in the city’s flower boxes? Has it ever occurred to you to call someone in the appropriate department and have it dealt with? You do drive along King St. don’t you? And how about all of those vacant industrial lands? But, that’s another letter in itself.

• Eradication of illegal multiple units. Really? This ward became a dumping ground for group homes and illegal multi-units on your watch sir. And now, after 19 years in office, you say you’re going to do something about it? Why should anyone believe you? You haven’t been effective previously, why would you change now? What do you propose to do with all of the tenants? Does your Stadium plan include low rental housing for the Ivor Wynne site? Well does it? The ward already has the makings of a ghetto. How many illegal mult-units are there? You don’t even know, so why do you care now?

• Responsive policing and safe neighbourhoods. Mr. Morelli, responsive policing has nothing to do with you, it has everything to do with the police department. It wasn’t anything you did while you served as Chair of the Police Board, so how do you propose to do anything now? Regarding safe neighbourhoods, please refer to the above comments regarding drugs, prostitutes and so called social clubs.

• Seniors, children & working families. So what exactly is your concern with seniors, children and working families? Mr. Morelli, have you read the Code Red study articles published by the Spec? All that was heard from you regarding was…nothing. That’s correct a resounding silence. The seniors don’t live as long in this ward as they do in others. I heard you were in favour of closing Birge Park, is that how you support children? By removing their neighbourhood park? There would be more working families, if there were jobs and opportunities. Seniors, children and working families, kind of tugs at the heartstrings (like apple pie and mom). So exactly what have you done to support these during your past term? An effective 19 year incumbent councillor should be able to run on his record of accomplishments. It’s the ineffective ones that run on promises of what they’ll do in the future. It seems to me you are doing a lot of promising.

Yes that's ME! The same manner in which Gary was treated by Mr.Morelli is very similar to the challenges that I’ve faced from the Ministry over the years. If you read the restraining order it explains the violation of teaching barbering at The Barber Centre was the violation. As soon as this violation was brought to our attention we have ceased with educational programs. It’s frustrating when you’re trying to do positive work in your community and you’re met with so much opposition by the government as in the Pearl Company case. I have always supported the initiatives at the Pearl Company and hope that Gary keeps up the great work. Good Luck Gary.
