In a press release he issued today, Councillor Sam Merulla (Ward 4) announced that he will be asking the next Committee of the Whole to consider moving the city administration to a four-day work week.
Noting rising energy costs, Merulla argues that a four-day week (working nine or ten hours a day) would reduce commuting time, lower energy use and greenhouse gas emissions, reduce office energy use, and increase productivity and staff morale.
He argues that the savings to the city could help to offset this year's projected $7 million deficit.

Many city officials have a hard time working a full 8 hour work day or 7.5 hours whichever it is... What's going to happen when it's 10 hours?

I think the world could handle a 4 day work week and we'd get the same amount done. We'd just do it a bit faster. Bring it on!

Mr Merulla would benefit from a course in Hamilton's Working History and specially the fight for the eight hour day. He might also be refreshed by the Hamilton&District Labour Council's support for the 32 Hour week (circa 1975). The Resolution passed the OFL and the CLC and was interpreted to mean four eight hour days, assuming the standard 3 x 8 shift pattern of those times rather than the 4 x 6 + 8 which was considered unworkable. Eight hours is sacred to Labour and anything over eight in a workday is overtime. Get to know the history of working class Hamilton Mr Merulla.

I am still waiting to read Merulla's response to worker'sright whose remarks are right on. I have often wondered if our elected officials pay attention to Hamilton history. workers' or otherwise.
