People

People have theories on how people arrived, but people have never agreed and never will.

By Kevin Somers

If you detach yourself and observe people with an alien's aloofness, you'd conclude everyone is crazy and people are (tragically) hilarious.

People aren't certain how people came to be. Some people say people slithered from the sea, some people think people crawled from a cave, and other people claim people were divinely dropped by one, or several Gods, to whom people sacrifice people.

People have theories on how people arrived, but people have never agreed and never will. People are people. Besides, people recognize a difference in opinion is a good excuse to wage war on people. From rocks and clubs to nukes and H-bombs, people have always loved killing people.

What's wrong with people?

Do you think George Bush ever thinks about all the people who have died in "Iran. I mean Iraq,"(sic)?

Some people are sick.

Where do people go when they die?

Evidently, people in America respond favourably to zany-dumb, attractive, middle-aged white women. Presidential Candidate Michele Bachmann makes Sarah Palin seem more sensible, sensitive, serene, sincere, and sane than John Boy Walton's parents.

Michele and her husband have a clinic where they encourage gay people to pray themselves straight.

Good night, John Boy. Good night, America. Good luck, people.

People Magazine is a magazine about people.

The people in The People's Republic of China make a lot of poor quality stuff. I live in Steel City, but everything for sale here is made by people in China and it's glorified junk.

People have strange ideas about business.

The people of Hamilton used to make good products, not just consume garbage.

People's roles are changing in Western culture, too. Women are the new men, but they're bad at it, too. Maybe worse, despite power-suits.

People are doomed.

Like a fish and a bike, women don't need men, but their children do. Statistics verify what common sense tells, children need a father, but people deny the truth when it's inconvenient or convenient.

Whenever I think my opinion of people can't get any lower, along comes someone like Andres Breivik, whose father is a retired diplomat living in France. Dad hasn't talked to his demented, deranged, devilish son in years. Like a lot of people, the diplomat was running around trying to save the world when he should have stayed home and paid attention to the people that needed him most.

People fail to acknowledge that it's not just charity that begins at home, everything does: love, compassion, decency, tolerance... all flow from home, people.

Raising good people is hard work, but there's no glory in anonymous, honest, sustained effort, so people blow-off parenting for greater rewards.

People are lost.

I spent over an hour walking the Bruce Trail on a beautiful day, recently. I encountered four people; a man, a woman, and two dogs. (Dogs are people, too.)

At the same time, there were 5.8 million people plodding pointlessly through Lime Ridge Mall, peeved because they're pasty, pale, plump, and poor, pining to be more presentable and have more pride in personal appearance.

People are peculiar.

People like Ps.

People like peas.

People need bees and they're dying.

I have no idea how people get rich, but it can't be easy. Some people at the top are smart and have worked hard and deserve every penny. Some people, like Rupert Murdoch and Conrad Black, get too big for their britches and take sleazy shortcuts.

I'd like to see Rupie and Connie swapping scandalous, sordid stories, while sharing soap, sadness, and sundries in a small cell with other somatotonic, somniferous, scions of the smug, self-satisfied, soulless, scurrilous, scribbling class.

People like me like alliteration.

Some people are crazy smart. "Big Genius" Kevin, for example, can fix your car and your computer. He can rewire your house and, probably, your head, if needed. I admire people like that.

I wonder if many people will go to The Festival of Friends this year. Ancaster people scare me.

People think bigger is better. From business, to bureaucracy, to brood, bigger means an increased likelihood of dysfunction and corruption, but it has everything to do with people's egos and nothing to do with anything else.

Some people are serious. Some people are clowns. Some people are afraid of clowns. Some people are afraid of heights.

Some people freak out when they start losing their hair.

People treat water like dirt and dirt like poison. In great swaths, people pave the ground and deny it its God-given function of providing life.

People around here pour tonnes of concrete on the Niagara Fruit Belt, while importing fruit-like substances from South America or Asia and lots of affluent, influential people call the scheme "development." I think it's diabolical, but people don't care what I think.

People will vote for Tim Hudak and not Andrea.

People get what they deserve.

People say we can't run a simple train through Hamilton. This city supported Canada, not long ago.

People listen to the Bill Kelly show. I stop and watch it on cable, once in a while when flicking around the channels, but can never stay long. I find it spiritual and cerebral poison. I don't know how people can take it. I'd rather remove my own appendix, which some people have done.

People talk too much. People sit around talking all day. Talk, talk, talk... A spike won't put itself in the ground, sometimes people have to shut up and pound.

People like rhyming couplets.

People talk about a "driveway-to-driveway" experience like it's wonderful.

I told you people are crazy.

People will waste their time reading this and get mad at me.

People cheat like it's nothing. Diving is a popular tactic people use in sports and life. How can people dive and cry and cheat and lie any time? How can people behave like that? Is there no honour in people? What happened to "olde-school rules," people?

Olde school rules, people!

Beautifully illustrated, Kevin.

People are beautiful. There is good in people and in a piece that outlines all the reasons why people are crazy, you proved that it's not all that encompassing because there are people like you who get it and hopefully at least one person who reads this might stop to think about every word and realize there are many things in life - many decisions, they really need to think long and hard about. Like voting for Andrea if you truly care about the future of the planet and of your children.

Political plug aside, as you so perfectly put Kevin, the most influencial journey parents or those who volunteer or are in a position to influence any child, can embark on is to basically look at all of the things you have touched on above, and teach them the importance of loving people (and yes, animals ARE people too), compassion, open-mindedness, and a genuine appreciation for all of Mother Natures creations and how utterly important than are for the future of this spiralling planet.

Oh, and I don't think Murdoch and Black should be in jail. Their riches should have just been erased, as well as the pieces of paper that say they deserve a certain status, shreaded. Then perhaps, make them work in a factory for the time they would have served behind bars. Monitor their bank accounts, limit their travel including not allowing them to have a passport, and give them a long hard look at the bottom line. Jail costs 'us' too much. Put them to work. Teach them a hard lesson.

Is this story in the wrong category perhaps? Entertainment and Sports doesn't seem fitting and perhaps might distract readers and this piece should not be overlooked.

A poster on my latest piece talked about people like Mahesh Butani and Mystoneycreek, being elitists. I was more or less tuned out from the world last week taking some long overdue R&R time, but I did sneak a read at the comments on my piece from time to time. A few have left my mind spinning, included this 'dig' at two people I greatly respect in this community.

Although I have openly admitted to Mystoneycreek in private messages that some of his and Mahesh's writing does go over my head periodically, I also stated that alternatively, I find their words to be almost poetic in nature. Their messages are very deep. Their words and reasonings are beyond works that I have read or worlds that I have travelled having only been around North America myself, but I do get the gist of what they are driving at.

I have on a few occassions, expressed an interest to get together with the two people who I chatted most with and who inspired and encouraged me most during the stadium debate (not neccessarily by taking a side, but by feeding me some very valuable material and words of their broader wisdoms). Mahesh I did meet both at my IWS rally, and at the Welcome Inn Community Centre where Mahesh served dinner, and our band played upstairs. I had the chance to talk with Mahesh for a good length of time that night, and I am here to say that if his words don't hit you deep on paper, spoken in his humble demeanor, they certainly will.

I know we will all get together at some point - or for the first time when time allows for it and so that we can discuss these views in broader, face to face terms. In the meantime, I will still take in their teachings with the utmost of respect and curiosity for the knowledge their curiosities have taught them, and for how valuable I feel their opinions are on the path to moving this city towards becoming the thriving community it has every potential of being.

That elitist comment made me realize - and this story furthered the statement I had been pondering last week, that we need many varying voices to get the important points across. As another commentor on my piece also stated, we need the voices and opinions of many - not singular. Undstrial had some great points to add to the discussion as well. Mystoneycreek asked us a question. It's a good one to ponder. Even if nothing else, your answers only exist within your own thoughts.

You need the people who can put facts and principles and visions into every man terms. You need the techi who although to many his voice may sound almost computer-like in itself (WRCU2), there is something intriquing about his cryptic nature that I am sure other techni's get. Either way, I still value his input even though I am not always sure where he (or she?), is going with a particular statement. As long as someone is getting it, who cares what you or I think really and that could be said about all articles, blog posts, and comments on this or any other site or news media outlet out there.

Of course there is Mahesh and Mystoneycreek (and so many other current users I am over-looking but by no means am I intentially doing), are concerned and there were once many others like them when I first stopped by Raise the Hammer that left me timidly wondering where my voice might fit in. I eventually found my place (or better yet I am still finding it), but somewhere along the line the fact is that we seem to have lost many of the highly educated, somewhat hard for everyone to understand, voices and we need them back. Maybe not for me (although I want them back too because the more I stumble through their words, the more they make sense and the more it makes me want to venture into the teachings that have brought their wisdoms to where they are today), but for those that understand the world on those terms, their voice is important and very valuable to these discussions.

Then you have Kevin here and if memory serves me right, many of his posts are similar to this one in the way they are structure at least. You could almost put this story in a poetry book and it would not seem out of place. He has brought important issues to the surface in a totally different voice and one that I believe is also needed. He has taken these issues and put a bit of a humorous, ironical, cynical, yet poetic in fashion spin on it that almost has his readers dancing through each line.

Some people might not get or like this piece or won't find any value in it - some seem to thrive on negativity and I wish I knew why, or in my piece, or Mahesh's or Mystoneycreeks blog or even Ryan and countless others for that matter. But that's okay because there is something in all of the above that suits how we as individuals, like or need or want to recieve the information we are looking for.

All of life should be treated this way. Something for everyone. From the way we teach our children, coach our athletes from childhood to retirement, and the way we lead our employees - or train our animals for that matter. We all learn and are encouraged differently. If we dont' recognize this early on, we will miss some valuable input from these people/creatures - leaving us with more and more souls who know somewhere inside that they have so much more to offer us, but are unsure of what exactly that is.

We all have taken unique paths no matter how similar some may seem on the surface. Of course, even our religious and social beliefs, our heritage, and our politcal stances all vary, but we all - each and every one of us, have many of the same basic needs and if we can use all of these collective voices to get these very important points across, we can ensure that every single human (including animals and the whole of nature), needs are met first and foremost.

Until every single being on this earth is given all the nurturing their souls require from food to loving arms, clothing and a safe roof over their heads, nothing else will matter. This starts locally and the leadership in which we chose to embrace, is what will inspire that change to reach into broader regions across the earth's surface.

Every community needs to learn how to become more self-sustaining so we need to focus as a community, on the things that can fix our city and not getting things to and from other citites or our relationship with other towns. We need to fix our homes first. What can we do within the four corners of our municipal boundaries, to make this a community where no living being needlessly suffers?

Everyone says that we must first fix ourselves, before we try to fix others. That when we fix the things that are broken internally first, that we will be better equipped to help others.

The same could be attributed to the question I recently asked 'What Does Hamilton Want to be When it Grows Up'. Perhaps when we have asked and addressed this question within ourselves - figured out what we as individuals want to be when we grow up (in 1 year, 5 years, 10 years), we will be better equipped to address what we want as a city collective.

But the bottom line is many voices. That is what we need to answer that all encompassing question - What Does Hamilton Want to be When it Grows Up? Better yet, it's what we need to address all issues, with everyone in mind - including what the little seemingly insignificant voice of an amphibian might add to a particular discussion on how any given decision might affect them.

But all the above is my one, singular voice.

Hey Larry and Dubya (a.k.a wrcu2):

Crazy small world story: Last summer, my neighbour asked me if I’d help him help another neighbour I hadn’t yet met. Mike had ordered 35 – 40 (?) sheets of drywall to finish his attic, but he broke his thumb the day they were dropped on his front lawn.

“Free Beer” was I’ll needed to hear and off we went. Mike was beyond grateful and said “thank you” three times for every Beer we drank and we drank a lot of Beer.

I had just published a piece called Flick on RTH where I described my frustration with my computer. Larry, you wrote in the comments you’d give me one for free.

I said to Mike, “Don’t worry, brother. Carrying dry-wall up stairs for hours on a hot day is Jenny Craig times ten. Besides, this is good Karma. Do unto others, Bob Loblaw.” (Get it?)

I continued, “I write for this blog and I guy I never met offered to give me a computer, yesterday. How nice is that?”

Mike said, “That sounds like my cousin, Larry.”

“Lawrence Pattison?” I asked.

“Yep, that’s him,” Mike said. “I’m not surprised. That’s the kind of guy he is. What blog do you write for?”

“Raise the Hammer.”

“ I know it. Ryan McGreal is a friend.”

Anyhoo, Mike and Beth (a.k.a. Mike’s Wife) are taking over the Sky Dragon café soon. I want to do a poetry reading there in the fall.

It would be great if you guys (and loved ones) could come.

Dubya, you should write about your daughter’s art. You have a way with words and this would be something close to your heart. I’m sure it would be masterful.

If Hamilton ever gets a train, I think they should let Ryan pick the colours.

Piece!

I'd been wondering about whether Mike and Lawrence were related...

There really aren't many degrees of separation in this town, are there?

You guys seem like early risers. How about tomorrow morning, Thursday, in front of City Hall at 9:30? We can go for coffee (until the bars open).

I’ll be riding my red rocket with its kick-ass basket.

Corrections from my previous comment: The article I was talking about, Larry, is “(Dis)Connected” from last summer, not “Flick.”

Dubya, you should write about your daughter’s art. You have a WONDERFUL way with words and this would be something close to your heart. I’m sure IT would be masterful.

Ummm. Sort of an early riser. Unfortunately, I have jumped ship by that time and firmly planted in my cube by 9:30 in Burlington, returning to downtown by around 6ish.

And Undustrial, you are right there about the seperation. When you live in a city all of your life, I am beginning to think 6 shrinks down to 2? And yes, Mike is my cousin, brother, best friend. Before I knew RTH existed, he was one of few people I had these sorts of RTH conversations with. He has taught me a lot. I could go on and I probably will some time soon before the opening of Home Grown.

Haivng a large family, having worked played and been involved in the community in some way for a long time, and living in different quadrants of the city, means there is almost someone that you know wherever you go. Hamilton is almost like a giant Cheers bar where everyone knows your name. Having a cousin like Mike who seems to know everyone, those degrees keep shrinking.

Those who know Mark Tharme (former graphic arts teacher of mine from Dundas Valley School of Art and then later friend of Mike and Beth's talking about 6 degrees), or the band he was once a part of The Responsibles, might remember a song about a 'Little Big City'. Great track with the perfect lyrics to describe our town. Love the entire CD actually but that track is my fav. Unfortunately, I cannot find a copy of it to listen to online. It is called Big City Small Town from the album Out All Night.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. It's the articles like this that throw me off of raise the hammer. These articles I feel damage the site's credibility and in this paticular case, comes off as holier then thou. Even more so since the Andrea and Hudak comments are unworthy for a site that purports to be non-partisan.

Just my two cents.

You are right though. It is a non partisan site it must be careful, but art is political. Art should not be non-partisan. Art is often inspired by things that affect us deeply. Sometimes those things are political and sometimes one person represents something that we feel very passionately against and being partisan when using your art - your voice, is like replacing the F word with oh darn. For RTH to continue to be a relaible and respected news source, perhaps it should continue to be partisan which I feel it is. But people from all walks of life contribite to this news source why can't some, be a little more off the cuf? Maybe categorize those pieces under opinion?

For me Hammer, this piece represents diversity in opinions from a city as diverse in culture and religion as it possibly comes.

I don't disagree that art can be political in nature. Heck I don't even disapprove of the author or the art of the piece in this case (although I did find it a bit melodramatic). My problem is art pieces like this, damage the credibility of the valid discussions.

The objective of Raise the Hammer is the betterment of the city of Hamilton and to promote discussion, debate, information and rouse action towards a set of key issues our city faces, for all Hamiltonians.

I just find it hard to have people take your positions seriously when after well researched, sourced and factual articles like the comparisons of Vancouver's and Hamilton's evolutions over time, and the more recent myths of LRT articles and then follow them up with disconnected (although done so to convey the theme of wandering thoughts, which it does well) essay about the idiocy of the conservative masses and general comments about the idiosyncrasies of people.

Just as Bratina and Kelly's abrasive comments during the Bill Kelly show poison us on any merits some of their positions may hold, so to do articles like this poison others to the positions this site adopts, and I'm not even talking along political lines exclusively.

I vastly prefer this sight to be about journalism and engagement, not high-brow artsy entertainment which isn't for everyone. Like I said though, just my two cents on the matter.

I don’t like conspicuously sensitive, politically correct, “intellects,” who think they’re the crest of the wave and look down on others, but can’t swing a hammer, Hammer. However, I don’t ask they be prohibited from contributing to RTH.

You don’t like my work, but others do and I like doing it. You call for my exclusion because you don’t like what I say, or how I say it. Censorship, even when it’s couched in compliments and passive-aggressive language, is Nazism 101.

Speaking of diminished credibility, you pose as a progressive, enlightened, liberated liberal but don't behave like one.

As I’ve said several times to Mystoneycreep, who has also called for me to be banished from RTH, you don’t have to read what I write. I put my name on everything.

If IT upsets you, move on.

Five or six times a year, I ramble on to amuse myself. That’s all it is. Find a greater cause.

People like you put me off people.

My too scents.

I DON'T THINK THEY CARE WHAT ANYBODY THINKS. THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT THE QUALITY OF THEIR FOOD. IT NEVER CROSSES THEIR MINDS UNTIL A BIG FOOD RECALL. THEN THEY FORGET IT IN 5 MINUTES.

People will vote for Tim Hudak and not Andrea.
MAYBE CHAIN GANGS WILL BRING FORTH A REVIVAL OF GOOD BLUES MUSIC? :p MY ONTARIO DOES NOT INCLUDE CHAIN GANGS OR TIM HUDAK!

People get what they deserve.

NO, NOT ALWAYS. THE RICH LIKE MURDOCH NEVER DO GET WHAT THEY JUSTLY DESERVE, & THE POOR MOSTLY DON'T DESERVE WHAT THEY GET.
DON'T SAY THAT TO A PARENT WHO HAS LOST A CHILD, OR A CHILD WHO HAS LOST A PARENT EARLY IN LIFE. NO ONE DESERVES THAT!

People say we can't run a simple train through Hamilton.
BECAUSE THE PEOPLE WHO SAY THAT, WON'T USE IT, EVEN IF IT WOULD BENEFIT THEM & EVERYONE ELSE TO DO SO.

This city supported Canada, not long ago.
I'VE BEEN HERE 16 YEARS, & I DON'T RECALL THAT. MAYBE I SHOULD HAVE COME HERE EARLIER?

People listen to the Bill Kelly show. I stop and watch it on cable, once in a while when flicking around the channels, but can never stay long. I find it spiritual and cerebral poison. I don't know how people can take it. I'd rather remove my own appendix, which some people have done.
I HEARD HIM ONCE, & THAT WAS MORE THAN ENOUGH!

People talk too much. People sit around talking all day. Talk, talk, talk...
I FREQUENTLY SAY NOTHING ALL DAY. IT CAN HAPPEN WHEN YOU LIVE WITH DEAF PEOPLE. IT'S PROBABLY WHY I WROTE ALL THIS..

A spike won't put itself in the ground, sometimes people have to shut up and pound.
"I'D RATHER BE A HAMMER THAN A NAIL, YES I WOULD, IF I ONLY COULD."- PAUL SIMON

People like rhyming couplets.
DOES NOTHING RHYME WITH 'COUPLETS'?! DAMN!! 'QUINTUPLETS'?

People talk about a "driveway-to-driveway" experience like it's wonderful.
IT IS, IF YOUR TRANSIT DOESN'T WORK.

I told you people are crazy.
AND I BELIEVE YOU!

People will waste their time reading this and get mad at me.
I DON'T THINK IT'S A WASTE OF TIME. DO YOU THINK IT'S A WASTE OF TIME REPLYING TO YOU?

People cheat like it's nothing. Diving is a popular tactic people use in sports and life. How can people dive and cry and cheat and lie any time? How can people behave like that? Is there no honour in people? What happened to "olde-school rules," people?

OLDE SCHOOL RULES HAVE BEEN RE-WRITTEN FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE SHABBY. HOW MANY FAKE PEOPLE ASK US TO GO BACK TO 'THE GOOD OLD DAYS' & THEN PICK OUR POCKETS BEFORE WE GET THERE?

Olde school rules, people!
WE REWARD MOST CHEATERS, & LAIRS NOW. WE ONLY REWARDED SOME OF THEM BACK THEN..

WHEN I WAS IN OLDE SCHOOL, OVER 50 YEARS AGO MY GR. 2 TEACHER WAS A TYRANT. ABOUT 30 YEARS LATER, I FOUND HER NAME ON A DOOR @ THE ONT. INST. FOR STUDIES IN EDUCATION & THAT BOTHERED ME. BUT, AT LEAST THAT GOT THE PSYCHO LADY OUT OF THE CLASSROOM & AWAY FROM CHILDREN.
