Raise the Hammer
Join Hamilton HIVE on September 25th at 7pm for a Pre-HIVEX 2014 Salon Series discussion on how we can elect to be better engaged in our democratic society. Speakers include John Beebe, Manager of Outreach of Samara Canada and Norman Kearney, Campaign Director of the People’s Platform at the Hamilton Civic League.
John is the manager of outreach for Samara and is focused on developing partnerships and programs that reach and engage Canadians. Previously John worked for Pathways to Education developing and leading academic support programs for students who faced academic challenges. John’s career includes stints as a freelance photographer, high school social studies teacher, and Chief of Staff to a United States Congressman (not necessarily in that order). He is also the proud parent of two highly engaged youth and married to the writer Peggy Moss.
Norman Kearney introduced participatory budgeting in Ward 2 of Hamilton. The successes and especially the failures of this project inspired him to create The People’s Platform. Norman studied philosophy and political science at McMaster University and is currently a master’s student at the Institute of Political Economy in Ottawa.
