On his 20 acre "Old 99 Farm " near Dundas Ontario, Ian Graham, 60, started in 2007 to create an intensive, livestock based garden farm, applying permaculture practices that respond to the perfect storm he believes is already here; the end of the ‘oil age’, climate upset, peak phosphorous, ecocidal industrial farming and species extinction. He started in 2007 integrating livestock (cattle, chickens, ducks, geese, sheep, pigs), extended season vegetable production, orchards and perennial food crops. You can see a case study of Old 99 Farm in Bane's The Permaculture Handbook, Garden Farming for Town and Country. Acutely aware of the challenges the current generation of farmers will face, Ian is eager to share his thoughts on how we must farm and live differently, while learning to live within the earth’s limits.
This field day will be a great chance to discussion about the challenges and opportunities of small scale and urban farming in the Age of Limits and to see how one adult onset beginning farmer is doing it!
