This is the opening night of FAUXtography, an exhibition by Dave Heidebrecht.

The first photograph was taken in 1825. By the end of 2013 there will be over 1.4 billion smartphones in use worldwide. The smartphone-based photo-sharing app Instagram, launched in October 2010 already boasts over 16 billion photos posted by some 150 million users. From artform to the mundane, from scandals to selfies, the digital revolution has put a camera in the palm of one in five people on earth. Photography has never been as accessible as it is now.

What happens when we are all photographers? How do 1.4 billion tiny screens in the palms of 1.4 billion hands redefine our relationships with ourselves, our friends and family, and the world around us? Do we value images more now than ever before, or has our value for the photograph disappeared completely? What have we lost? What have we gained? What happens when our digital history is laid out before us? Unable to click, like, tap, or tweet, how does it feel to once again hold a photograph between our fingertips?

Framed within the ever-changing landscape that is the human condition, FAUXtography challenges us to step back, look up from our smartphones, and re-engage. With ourselves. With each other. With the world around us.
