I think the tension's found between innovation considered as the refinement of an existing product and the creation of a new product. Refinement and creation from nothing are utterly different. What I read in your comment is the process of refinement. That process, however, is, again, different from creation of a new and, ostensibly, useful thing, whatever it might be. There are very few useful things in the world, though it depends on how broadly or narrowly you define the adjective, but there are many things that exist now that supplant earlier forms of technology and the worlds that were inhabited by those early technical forms.
