Here's a great example of adding density in the suburban areas of Hamilton with retail facing the sidewalk, and parking in behind.

Unfortunately it's being opposed by a handful of residents. 190+ units is apparently a big problem. I wonder if they wrote letters and complained about the past 2,000 homes that were built in the immediate area requiring constant expansion of roads/sewers etc.....

City Hall needs to get good and demonstrating how mixed-use developments will enhance, not harm a neighbourhood. Having shops and services in walking distance is a huge bonus and massive boost to local property values.
Residents shouldn't oppose developments that add to the tax base, but instead should demand great sidewalks, bike infrastructure and landscaping along a new street boulevard.
