The most important part of the "naked streets", IMHO, is the realization that our own streets are anything but.

When car companies first managed to get laws past which forbid people from the streets, they were resisted by judges, the New York Times, and even women assaulting police in the streets with their parasols. It took a massive and well-funded PR campaign to win the war, in the name of "safety"...
