Milkweed is often wrongly regarded as a weed, but I have never heard it referred to as an invasive species. Even among the general public, the term is usually understood to refer to non-native species such as garlic mustard and purple loosestrife, that take over ecosystems, crowding out native species (such as milkweed) and creating sterile, unsustainable monocultures. You can see why people might think it's a bad idea.
