An average mature tree blocks 80 - 90% of the solar radiation hitting it, and when placed properly around a home can significantly reduce the cooling load required in the summer.

Using lighter coloured concrete rather than black asphalt also goes along way, ditto for high reflectivity roofing, awnings and canopies.

There's a lot of simple stuff that can be done to improve the thermal comfort of an environment.
