Agreed. There's also the matter of universal design – this area needs to be accessible to all individuals. Lawns are not only upkeep intensive, but they are also difficult to navigate with a walker or wheelchair.

And while the breeze-block horrors of the Gore Park Massacre days rightly linger in peoples' memory, and while the frost-driven undulations of the interlocking brick roadway (sort of carried through to the SW sidewalks of King and James) are almost as well remembered, hardscaping technology has come a long way in the last 30 years.
