An independent analysis commissioned by Metrolinx pegged the cost of automobile congestion in Hamilton and the GTA at $6 billion (!) for 2006. That is insane, and widening highways and adding HOV lanes won't alleviate the problem in any meaningful way, especially considering projected population growth for the area in the coming decades. Sooner or later even the ideologues will have to acknowledge that the transportation mix as it's currently configured comes at way too high a cost.
