Good article, some interesting points raised here. It's my understanding that, although food plays a role in deer populations, it's the predator/prey relationship with the wolf that has really affected the boom in deer populations over recent years. It would have been nice to see reference to research on these issues within this article.

I also understand that the current overpopulation of deer, caused mainly by us shooting the wolves that used to eat them, can, and in some years has, detrimental impacts on young native tree species.

If we won’t tolerate wolves, then how else can we control deer populations except for shooting them and, for the responsible hunter, eating the meat?

I agree that a better understanding is required on this issue.
