The glory days will return very fast when trucking companies have to pay for the maintenance costs their trucks impose on roads in the same way that railway companies have to pay for the maintenance of their railways.
Ending the unfair competition caused by this huge government subsidy to trucking companies will cause a lot more freight to be carried by rail.
