I absolutely agree and I certainly wouldn't advocate stripping away all of the historical architecture in a city - especially not in Hamilton where so much of it exists. However there may be some exceptions where the building is beyond repair (how it got like that - ie neglect - is a separate argument) or the financial argument for repair doesn't make sense. Or, a heritage/historical building is vacant, dilapidated and a Frank Gehry or Jack Diamond are being retained to build on the land. That, to me, is an opportunity that I think even the architect of the original building could appreciate and one that could bring some status and recognition to the city.

Replacing with a gas station, parking lot or standard condo wouldn't cut it in my opinion.
