Ryan's commentary is most welcome. May I suggest some background reading on this issue: George Grant's Lament for a Nation (1964), still the best account of the Americanization of Canada. Among other things, this book celebrates John Diefenbaker, a Canadian Prime Minister who stood up to the then American president John Kennedy in the early 60's. Diefenbaker was a Progressive Conservative when the term "Progressive" meant something. ... Grant, by the way, has a real connection with the Hammer. He taught at Mac for nearly 20 years (1961-1980) and while there established the Religion Dept. as the best of its kind in N. America. He left Mac in disgust, alas, fed up with its "multiversity" pretensions. No wonder there is no fit memorial to Grant there.
