Raise the Hammer
Elie Wiesel, the man who recounted his childhood nightmare at the hands of the Nazis in his book, Night, made an astute speech to the Canadian Bar Association on Monday.
Speaking of the exasperation we all sometimes feel when working for justice he said:
Maybe we cannot help, but to say we are helpless is surely not an option. Indifference is not the beginning of the process. It is the end because what comes after it is nothing.
Not a single good book was written out of indifference. Not a single good painting was painted out of indifference. Not a single good piece of music was written out of indifference.
How true.
It helps to be reminded, as we contemplate the setbacks and frustrations that feature so prominently in the lives of everyone who toils for positive change, that apathy is not an option.
