A huge announcement on light rail transit is to be made in Toronto tomorrow.
If you live in Hamilton, guess what: No announcement is to be made on rail transit tomorrow.
Have no fear though, Main Street is still five lanes, devoid of business or pedestrians, and lights timed ready for you to kill anyone who steps off the sidewalk.
Someone remind me, why did Hamilton's population shrink by .39% this census?

actually the Star wrote a correction today:
"The 2006 census gave Hamilton's population as 504,559, a 2.91 per cent increase since 2001."

I'm referring to the City of Hamilton. Not the goofy amalgamated city of Hamilton. I'm not impressed with the suburbs paving over farmland and then proclaiming their fabulous growth. The old city lost people.
I think that's excellent news, and that gives me some hope that Hamilton will see the light. Toronto being what it is will naturally lead the way in transit improvements and these are all badly needed. In fact I'd argue that considing its size, Toronto's rapid transit coverage is even more lacking than Hamilton's. Only 2 subway lines? (you can hardly count Sheppard). I believe Toronto is the only city in North America with a traditional street car system still in operation (all others have either been scrapped or converted to light rail), this should give them many interesting options for light rail projects. This should catch on in Hamilton, epecially when the economic benefits really start to show.
