Fringe 2016 Review: On a Limb and a Prayer

The basic premise of the play is good. A play within a play; a student needing to do well on a final project and a great Stage Manager who helps him with his project. There were many laughs from the audience as many seemed to understand and appreciate what happens backstage with its occasional chaos.

There were two occasions when I found the play a bit hard to follow. There were vital plot details that were given by cellphone, so with a frenetic stage manager moving around a busy set I did get somewhat confused.

There were one or two characters mentioned that do not appear, so the audience has to listen hard to what is being said. Normally when actors have smaller actions onstage, they are directed to make them 'larger than normal' so the audience in the back seats can 'read' what is happening.

Our audience was let into the secret early that something has happened to the props and laptop and we do find out eventually what happened. The inventive stage manager does what she can to create the set, our actor starts his rehearsal and things continue on from there.

People in the audience were appreciative. There were laughs throughout but there were also some thought provoking 'disclosures' about the stage managers health and what she is coping with...no spoilers from me however.

As someone who has a lot of experience with disability concerns, it was interesting how the SM's health concerns were included in the plot of the play. Our student doing his final show also has some health concerns and yes, the 'graphic catheter' description had everyone groaning.
