Bay Street North between Stuart Street West and Strachan Street West will be closed until mid-December so that CN Railway can replace the bridge over its railway.
The City is converting MacNab Street to two-way between Cannon Street and Burlington Street, so people can travel in either direction across the CN railway while the Bay Street bridge is closed.

This, dear Readers, is the only reason why MacNab is converting to two-way.

Surely CN could have waited until the fall for this work. Bay is a very popular, and direct route to/from the waterfront all summer. On the bright side, this is probably what led to the two-way conversion of MacNab so we'll take it!

They closed Bay 6 days early due to safety concerns. You know what other streets have serious safety concerns in Hamilton, and could use immediate action? King, Main, Cannon, Queen, Wellington, Victoria, Wentworth......

As a bike user of MacNab, I'll save my celebrating until i see the results. I gather the plan doesn't include bike lanes. Right now i find it a quiet and relatively safe way to cycle up from the North End (i realize that technically this is riding the wrong way up the street, but this seems to be an accepted and common practice).
I'm not particularly excited about having to cycle right next to parked cars on my return trip northbound under the new configuration. I often have a 3-year old in a bike seat with me and i'm not particularly willing to take the chance that i might get "doored" by someone who doesn't look before getting out of their car. I hope i'm wrong about the planned configuration. I support the two-way conversions for the big one-ways, but i already find this the best route to get from Bayfront and the North End to the James North strip and the Farmer's Market/Library. My least favorite stretch of the ride is the two-way segment south of Cannon, especially as MacNab nears York Blvd. Maybe that's just me.

The McNab conversion is part of the North end Traffic managment plan www.northendneighbours.com
Implementation of the plan started in April 2013. John st bridge will be done in 2014. James st bridge will be done in 2015. In time for the new GO Station & Pan am games coming in 2015. The bridges are being replaced due to the Height clearances for the new GO trains. Instead of being repaired. The Bay st Bridge was closed early due to it being unsafe for vehcle traffic it is still currently open to pedestrian & cycle traffic. The conversion WILL BE PERMANENT.
