Are you a CBC user and have something to say about CBC's new digital station in Hamilton? McMaster University is conducting a research project on CBC Hamilton and is in need of Hamiltonians for a focus group on the evening of May 15th.

Your voice and opinions will be of great help in making the CBC a great success in the city.

If interested or if you have any questions, please email me at weilerk@mcmaster.ca.

Kara Weiler is a teaching assistant at McMaster University.

Consultation is good and all, but this seems like a bit of a feedback loop. Wouldn't the idea be to fill voids in media coverage? If so, it's pretty self-explanatory: If you've heard about it on TV or radio, read about it on Twitter or Facebook, or seen it in The Spec, odds are you need to dig deeper. Start by avoiding the crutch of status quo hashtaggery and EcDev-Chamber-Tourism Hamilton-James North-Locke South onanism iced with rich multimedia. Telling the story of how the cool kids landed in a city that looked like Parkdale with gigantism but had Honest Ed house bargains, or how an old immigrant neighbourhood is a hidden gem with a seamy past, or how an industrial city is turning the corner or a steel town lives in harmony with nature only adds reverbs to the riffs that have been played ad nauseam. Surprise. Delight. Engage new audiences. Break new ground. Dare to offend. Disregard sacred cows.

"...EcDev-Chamber-Tourism Hamilton-James North-Locke South onanism..."

Five months in and I feel like Nostradamus.

You're entitled to that POV, but I'm more intrigued by a media outlet that foregrounds the process , that is overtly looking to have its audience provide its focus (something that ends up happening one way or another anyway, whatever stories we may choose to tell ourselves).

Out the old boys. Report on actual news. Scrutinize city hall.

Stop tweeting coffee breaks.

Please report the City as it is. We are a great city with many stories, good and bad. We have some of the greatest real estate and some of the worst. Be proud of all of our city. Be professional, thats what we are missing with the exception of a few Spectator columnists. I feel ripped off that we aren't getting a full fledged CBC station, but I realize that what we have is the future of broadcasting. I look forward to CBC Hamilton. Thank you

Amen. The city covers around 1,200 square kilometers and contains scores of neighbourhoods but we tend to hear about a very small sliver of that.

Investigative news is something that The Spec has tended to do only as a bid for newspaper awards. News should have no season, and it should never stoop to PR pantomime (cf. The conflict-of-interests inherent in Spec Business). The Spec never broke stories like Philip/Taro or Azurix/American Water. The Spec was wretchedly biased on Red Hill, to the point of advocacy. Take the decades of experience in local media and unlearn the bad habits that came along with them. Shoe leather, not Google.
