Ontario Election 2011

Candidate Questions for Provincial Election

By RTH Staff
Published September 02, 2011

Starting next week, RTH will gear up for coverage of the upcoming Ontario provincial election. As always, we will ask a set of questions to all the candidates for the Hamilton-area ridings (Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Waterdown, Hamilton Centre, Hamilton East-Stoney Creek, Niagara West-Glanbrook and Hamilton Mountain) and publish their responses to the RTH Elections site.

Given the Hamilton- and urban-oriented focus of RTH, what questions would you like us to ask the candidates?

Post your questions in the comments below this article, one comment per question. Then vote up the questions you want to see answered. We'll compile the most-upvoted questions and send them to the candidates.

Hamilton has received quite a bit from the Liberal government of Dalton McGuinty: social service uploading (started), Social Services contributions (in the 100s of millions), Ivor Wynne Top Up, Lister Block contribution, Airport development, Hospital upgrades, Full day k in schools, and much more.

If you are a Liberal, how will you top yourself? If you are a member of the other party how will you top the Libs?

Get rid of all day kindergarten for a start. Get rid of the OHIP tax. Lower gas tax. Modify the HST. Money for stay at home moms. Modify drive clean by making it strictly for businesses (trucking companies etc.) money or tax breaks for cities that build bike lanes, car pool lots, parks etc.. Return to paying for public schools only. Just some of many more I'm sure.

Do you support Open Government / Open Data? If so, what (specifically) will you do to ensure its success? If not, why not?

What would your government's position on the fairness of inter-generational debts be if elected/re-elected?

Lower birthrates over the past decades combined with a low-growth economy will mean that today's young people are very likely to be saddled with paying back sizable portions of the public debts racked up by their parents' generation, so how can [your] government ensure that the previous generation pays its fair share before kicking the bucket?

Given that growth is not sustainable explain your vision of a sustainable future for Hamilton. Include your views on
1 Transportation- Mid Peninsula Highway vs other forms of transit
2 Speculative investment -Aerotropolis investment vs protecting farmland .
3 Investment Priority- Downtown complete liveable walkable communities vs Urban Sprawl developments and big box corridors with segregated use developments.

Do you support the green-belt and urban intensification over suburban expansion?

How do you plan to bolster job creation in (former?) industrial cities like Hamilton?
