Municipal Election 2010

Hamilton Municipal Election Website Not Accessible

I took a look at the City of Hamilton's municipal election web page, since that time is fast approaching, but mostly because I was interested to see what kind of voter accessibility information they have up.

The answer is none. No information about things like voting by proxy, advance voting, having your ballot transferred to an accessible poll location, or voter assist terminals.

That information is already up on the Toronto website, on their voter FAQ page. Oh, I know, Toronto is bigger and shinier than we are (they're hosting the G8!), but even Guelph has more information up now than Hamilton does.

Toronto also subscribes to Browsealoud, which provides free software to users who would benefit from being able to use a text-to-speech program to surf, so they can do so without purchasing expensive software themselves, and without having to go through the cumbersome process of having to copy and paste text (or have someone do it for them) into Word to use the Windows text-to-speech feature. Yes, yes, I know, Toronto...

But Pickering is Browsealoud-enabled, too - and Port Hope.

Come on, Hamilton. Couldn't you move a little faster on the accessibility front? Even Goderich is beating us there.

The information may be there Michelle, but since its the city of Hamilton's website you may need to randomly click links until you discover a cryptically named pdf file with the information you seek.

hamilton.ca, it's not just a website, it's an adventure!

We need to put the traffic engineers in charge of the website. They'll get rid of all the annoying content and just have big fat one-way hyperlinks running through the site at top speed.

Allowing my RSS reader to breeze through the feed that much faster!

(As if the city actually has an RSS/Atom feed! lol)

hey michele
if you get all the election info , the old guard and lacklustre, no vision councillors might not get re-elected,, have you watched any of the council meetigs lately ? they have already gone into lame duck mode.. what a sorry lot.. the men are wearing ties and jackets again for photo ops for their brochures
( but I got to give mayor fred some credit for trying .. he must be frustrated)

The tough part is registering to be able to vote !!!
I go through this procedure every single municipal election in Hamilton and have to prove I am a Canadian Citizen here, born in Canada, have to drag someone along to vouch for me and they still give me a hard time about voting. I'm a CANADIAN ... I was born in this country !!!
