Comment Deadline for Carcinogenic Pollution Standards is Tomorrow

If you are able today, please submit your comments to the Ontario Ministry of the Environment for the regulation of benzene and benzo(a)pyrene.

These are cancer causing compounds that residents who live in the neighbourhoods surrounding the steel industries in Ontario, and in particular Hamilton, have been subjected to for decades at levels that far exceed the proposed standards because there has never been a legal standard in Ontario.

If air quality standards for these compounds are created, they will be enforceable in five years. However, industries can submit Applications for Alternative Air Standards that would change the enforceable targets for those industries. The steel companies are complaining that the new proposed standards are unachievable, because they say the targets are the background levels of these chemicals in any community.

However, technology does exist to reduce these emissions. Ultimately, it comes down to cost: the steel industry feels these standards are economically unfeasible. Neighbourhood residents, however, disagree.

To submit a comment, visit the Ministry of the Environment webpage for benzo(a)pyrene and/or the Ministry of the Environment webpage for benzene and click the Comment button on the right hand side.

The deadline for comments is September 29!
