More Transportation Improvements

As a follow-up to yesterday's post about our next batch of transit improvements, I also wanted to share some info on two more exciting initiatives that are taking place in Hamilton now to help create a more balanced transportation system.

The first is the installation of more secure bike parking facilities around the city.

This next batch of bike lockers will be located underground near the Hamilton Convention Centre. The first downtown location was installed in the York Boulevard parkade last year. A complete listing of bike lockers can be found on the city website.

At $40.00 per year, this will certainly catch the attention of downtown workers and give them a legitimate option and a financial incentive to keep their car at home.

The second intiative is an update on the Hamilton Car Share program. A recent RTH article outlined the details so I won't rehash them here, but I wanted to mention it as it is part of this broad strategy to finally bring some balance into Hamilton's transportation network.

With work continuing on Hamilton's LRT plans and more streetscaping and two-way street conversions being planned Hamilton could finally begin to function and feel like a real city again. Much like our urban past, balance is going to be the key to our future.

Two-way conversion is planned? I thought the conversions were on hold while LRT studies were taking place. Also, I was under the impression that the two-way conversion of Main & King was a Consultant's Firm suggestion, not a plan?

Thanks for the info re: the bike lockers! I had no idea it was so inexpensive! That's amazing!

as far as I know two way conversions are planned for York Blvd, Hess North and Caroline North in the next couple of years.

I cannot wait for the York Blvd conversion!

Read some pretty suggestive articles in The Spec re: LRT and how that would mean two-way Main & King for sure.

I hope that doesn't start an Anti-LRT Campaign; and if so, I hope we're ready for some amazing, typical-Hamiltonian-centred rebuttles!

Walking/Public Transit is a hard sell for a City that has been force-fed Vehicular Propaganda (ie: One-Way Arteries) for almost 60 years!

we'll all have to sharpen our pencils and get ready for some well-thought out letters to the editor as well as calls to call-in shows. The Spec has clearly been onside regarding LRT, but I still believe that they are salivating over the papers they can sell with some huge "ONE WAY MAIN STREET" headlines for several months if Metrolinx does choose LRT and if the city continues with their plan for 2-way traffic on King and Main with 2-way LRT on King. I do believe the Spec editors want us to get LRT, but money trumps all else. I'm convinced that they won't miss the chance to jump on a hot-button issue like this with some less than logical editorials, headlines and letters to the ed.
Heck, look at the recent letters to the editor during normal times. two-way conversion proposed for Main and King will bring all sorts of craziness out of the woodwork in this city. Regular folks like us will have to do a good job at presenting the facts and the benefits of LRT to our entire city, not just the downtown core. Don't expect anyone else to.

LOL I think HamiltonLightRail.com should start a special "GO LRT OR GO HOME" task force, with representatives from different walks of life going around to community centres in all areas of Hamilton (and Hamilton Commuter communities like Grimsby & Burlington) presenting their (our) case once the City Staffers make their presentation.
