Raise the Hammer
Every now and then a play sneaks up on you and catches you by surprise.
Initially, Dante (a recent play by American Kaitlin Phillips) seems to be a domestic drama, as Laura nags her hubby Dante about his inability to get motivated since he finished his book, while she reveals that she has 'borrowed' his writing for advertising jingles at her work.
Then suddenly Beatrice steps into a light and tells us about her eight-year-old self, that first sighting that inspired Dante's poems. From then on, the show sings.
The three characters are intertwined in a modern plot that keeps flipping us around, in and out of history, with some Renaissance Italian thrown in, always making us think about artists and their creations, their muses, their temptations, their choices and their sacrifices.
Honestly and directly acted by the ensemble: Kristan Brown as Laura, Forrest Seamons as Dante and Caitlin Goldie as Beatrice.
