Downtown Hamilton Survey in Spectator

Shameless plug: your humble editor gets a mention in today's Spectator in an article by Meredith MacLeod on the city's new downtown Hamilton survey:

Ryan McGreal, editor of Raise the Hammer online magazine and a downtown advocate, hopes the survey will help the city shake some time-honoured misconceptions about the downtown.

"The downtown has made an awful lot of progress in the last eight to 10 years but the public perception hasn't caught up. The downtown is not the awful, scary, dangerous, burned-out core that many people think it is."

McGreal says a lot of people whiz through the downtown on one-way streets and don't take time to really see what's going on.

Along with marketing, he says the city should create investment districts where zoning requirements are eased, bureaucratic hurdles are removed and money is loaned for brownfield remediation.

Ryan McGreal, the editor of Raise the Hammer, lives in Hamilton with his family and works as a programmer, writer and consultant. Ryan volunteers with Hamilton Light Rail, a citizen group dedicated to bringing light rail transit to Hamilton. Ryan wrote a city affairs column in Hamilton Magazine, and several of his articles have been published in the Hamilton Spectator. His articles have also been published in The Walrus, HuffPost and Behind the Numbers. He maintains a personal website, has been known to share passing thoughts on Twitter and Facebook, and posts the occasional cat photo on Instagram.
