The Ainslie Wood/Westdale Community Association sent the following letter to the City of Hamilton in response to the recent controversy over whether City Council still supports the Hamilton Light Rail Transit (LRT) project.

Mayor Fred Eisenberger, Members of Hamilton City Council:

Despite concerns about major disruption along the path of construction and the possibility of escalating costs, the Ainslie Wood/Westdale Community Association supports light rail transit for the City of Hamilton. Every year demand on our arterial roads in West Hamilton is getting worse. Bus transit cannot meet it even now.

Light rail transit can handle more riders than buses while being cleaner for the environment, quieter, smoother, more comfortable, faster, and costing less to maintain. To draw drivers out of their cars, we desperately need to make public transit attractive. Displaced buses and drivers could then be moved to underserviced areas of the city to increase areas covered and frequency and to include weekends.

It would be incredibly backward looking to turn down $1-billion in job creation and infrastructure money for this project. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to modernize Hamilton's transit, and it needs to be modernized to keep up with this changing city.

Sincerely yours,

The Board of the AWWCA

Please take a few moments to tell Council to take YES for an answer, reaffirm its support for LRT and accept the full capital funding from the Province that Council has consistently voted for since 2008.
