Over the last three years in partnership with the City of Burlington, BurlingtonGreen has realized the retrieval and proper disposal of more than 8,100 kg of litter, the sorting and recycling of over 450 kg of paper and plastic and 385 kg of metal, the collection of 31 tires and lots more.

This year we invite all citizens to participate in our Community Clean Up Green Up event from 9:00 AM to noon on Saturday April 26, 2014 with School and Business Clean-Ups from April 21 to 25.

Also, by combining technology, social awareness and art, our friends from Litterati have been tackling the ever-escalating problem of litter on streets and parks digitally, and on a global scale. Lets help them, and put Burlington and Hamilton on the map as clean up leaders!

Litterati uses the Digital Landfill, a photo gallery showcasing the different pieces of litter being picked up, and the overall impact of the movement. The landfill (over 35,000 pieces to date!) is used to work with companies and organizations to find environmentally friendly and sustainable solutions.

So, when you're out at BurlingtonGreen's Clean Up Green Up event, or doing your own local clean up:

  1. Find a piece of Litter
  2. Photograph it with Instagram (If you don't have Instagram, send the photo to tom@burlingtongreen.org)
  3. Hashtag your photo with #Litterati and #CUGU2014
  4. Properly dispose, recycle, or compost the Litter

Clean Up Green Up is a popular city-wide event that provides a fun and rewarding opportunity for citizens, schools, churches, businesses and groups to celebrate Earth Day and take pride in our city by cleaning up their communities.

"The impact includes cleaner parks, streams, school yards and neighbourhoods throughout Burlington and a tremendous amount of civic pride for all involved." says BurlingtonGreen's Executive Director, Amy Schnurr.

Lets show how proud Burlington and Hamilton is of its urban and natural landscapes by cleaning and greening them this year. We hope to see you, your friends, and your family out there on April 26th!

Green Up opportunity: In addition to the many clean-up activities, there will be two special Green Up project events thanks to the Great Lakes Guardian Community Fund.

Up to 100 people can sign up to participate in each of the stewardship events to improve the coastal environment of Lake Ontario's Beachway Park by picking up litter, removing invasive species and planting native grasses, shrubs and trees.

Enter to Win: All schools that register to participate in the Clean Up event and send in a photo of their students "in action" will be entered into a draw for a chance to win $250 to support an eco-project at their school.

Thanks to Tim Horton's, two $250 prizes will be awarded - one for participating elementary schools and the second for participating high schools.

Thank You Celebration: All participants are invited to attend a Thank You Celebration at Burlington's City Hall on April 26th from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. where they can enjoy a complimentary BBQ and refreshments, a free raffle, various eco-displays and activities for children.

Register Today! It is easy to sign up and clean up supplies are free! Simply go to www.burlingtongreen.org for more information or to register your family, school, business or group.
