It's called Climate Change - expect more extremes in the future and less predictable weather patterns.

Why do people find what I've said so offensive?

Weather isn't climate. Weather is what happens moment to moment in the atmosphere; climate is the long-term average of weather over time in particular places. As an adage puts it, climate is what you expect, and weather is what you get. Global warming doesn't preclude cold snaps, even severe ones.

Local isn't global. This month's severe cold isn't affecting the whole planet, or even the whole USA. The same weather pattern that has funneled frigid air into Chicago and Minneapolis has brought unusual warmth to Alaska and severe drought to California. Even more to the point, the USA covers just 2% of Earth's surface. Australia had its hottest year on record last year and experienced temperatures this month as high as 118.

Actually, you are the one making the a priori assumption here, which is that those who believe God made the sun didn't come to that conclusion based on questioning.

Let me ask you, who did make the sun? If you say, as you will, that it wasn't made per se, but formed over x amount of years following the big bang, then you must still believe in the impossibility that something can come from nothing (e.g. God).

And if you believe that, then clearly you're not any more rationale than me.

In any case, the only guidance we've been given is God's guidance. The question is, are we open to receiving it? It seems people have too many assumptions. We need to empty those out if we are to better understand each other.

Mine is only sincere advice to myself and you.

"...He is the Beneficent. In Him we believe and in Him we put our trust. And you will soon know who it is that is in error manifest. Say: Have you considered, If your water were to disappear into the earth, who then could bring you gushing water?" (Qur'an 67: 29-30)

Its almost every other day now I hear people asking what's wrong with "mother nature", our earth. It is global warming without doubt, which is the fruit of our greedy, wasteful, and destructive ways. We need to turn back before its too late.

Great beautiful species are going extinct before our very eyes (e.g. elephants and tigers). The majestic qualities in these creatures which we describe human beings with are also seemingly becoming rare. Whereas we've got no shortage of cockroaches and rats, and jelly fish (which are like many people nowadays: mindless, spineless, consume and destroy everything).

Tuna fish will be extinct in twenty years at the rate we're fishing.

We can't loose sight of these greater realities when we fight for walkable neighbourhoods/ complete streets, cleaner air, etc. Fighting for these things is not a matter of luxury or choice but of duty and necessity, moral responsibility to those who come after us.

Global warming is increasing the probability of cold winters. The circumpolar vortex is caused by the temperature difference between the arctic and the mid-latitudes, such as where we live. Since the arctic has experienced a greater warming than the mid-latitudes, there is less of a temperature difference between the two areas. And thus the polar vortex is slowed down and it becomes wavier. So relatively cold polar air can move down into our area and relatively warm mid-latitude air can move further north, like into Alaska. We can expect more cold winters than in the past. Remember, although it is bitterly cold for us, this air isn't that cold for the far north.

No disrespect, but you don't think the sky is falling? Please tell us what planet you're on so we can join you, this one we call earth is dying (being murdered actually).

It's strange how the people who often mock religious faith based on some kind of "scientific reasoning" are very often the same people who are ignorant about the science on global warming.

We don't want to heed the warnings of prophets and messengers or even scientists who are our modern day prophets. Perhaps there are more reliable authorities, but I'm not aware of them myself. Please advise if you are.

Watch this video of Jon Stewart from the Daily Show. Look at his face when the news reader says something like: "People can't claim there's global warming after THIS WEEKEND".

Weight of evidence and stats is larger than one weekend/one winter.
