I suspect your friend was reacting to an incorrect folk etymology. The expression "slavish devotion" is a reference to the obedient demeanour of a slave, not to some supposed character of eastern Europeans.

No, he was technically right.

The word does come from the fact that many Slavs were taken prisoner by Otto the Great and sold as, well, slaves.

Where he was mistaken is in assuming that the use of the term was derogatory in any way, shape or form.
