Post Events to RTH Event Listing

Registered RTH users can now post their own events to the RTH event listing.

In the traditional communications media, the editor served as quality control - filtering and selecting material before the fact so that only high-quality content made it into the scarce, expensive-to-produce publication.

The advent of widespread access to social media via the internet has transformed publishing from an expensive, scarce commodity into a cheap, abundant commodity. As Clay Shirky points out, the cost of publishing hasn't just declined - it has collapsed.

With this in mind, I increasingly find myself thinking of my role as RTH editor not in terms of filtering and enabling content but rather as a bottleneck - an obstacle to self-publishing of useful information.

A particular case in point is the Word on the Street (WOTS) event listing, for which I too frequently fail to post important events due to time constraints.

So why not let registered RTH users post their own events?

This is only available to registered RTH users. You must be logged in to access the form. If you do not have an RTH user account, you can easily create one.

Also, RTH reserves the right to delete without notice any event that is illegal, obscene, vulgar, hateful, threatening, or otherwise offensive.

The online form is pretty straightforward and fairly permissive. Required fields include:

Event Title - this will be the title of the event page
Event Date - Year, Month, Day as separate fields
Event Time - no standard format, just enter the time as you prefer
Event Details - similar to the comment form, HTML not allowed

In addition to these required fields are several optional fields to provide more information about the event:

Location - the place where the event will be held
Address - the street address of the event location
Contact Email - a person or organization to contact for more information / registration
Contact Email - email address for contact person
Contact Phone - ten digit phone number for contact person
Contact Ext. - telephone extension for contact person
Event Web Page - hyperlink to the event web page (don't forget the http://)

is there a particular scope for the event listings, or is anything open game if it is happening in, or has to do with hamilton?

That's a good question. I reckon it should be pretty wide open. My only objection as site editor would be something illegal or horribly offensive - if I notice a post about a Neo-Nazi parade, I'm going to delete it.

Otherwise, it's pretty much all good: public meetings, cultural events, concerts, craft sales, knitting circles, conferences, street parties, rallies, and so on.

Hi all, I just posted but i clicked "yes" when an update firewall popped up(?) msg gone and I had expected "restore previous session"

Anyway, I want to post a bit late event.

I have a show of my paintings displayed all May at Bad Dog cafe on Locke St but it's paintings of non theme variety. Nothing related to cycling, political or Critical Mass (missed again) etc.
I do plan on more variety but I'm grateful to even show my art in a long time.
I do more used bike sales and services is at this time better income than art.

Every1 sees me around but most don't have a clue what I do for living.

Ok, show at Bad Dog last day and take down is May 31st Sunday.

Reception tomorrow 7-9 pm.

I want to say this too.....I won awards for my art few times and sold some at a great price but slowed to a snail over yr ago.

Bad Dog cafe owner suggested I lower my paintings to sell at around $200 or so. My jaw near hit the floor as that's less what I earned in the 70s. I did lower all my paintings in show but I'm more interested in showing and getting more known.

Especially when Transit Gallery across St sold a simple abstract(?!) $3500 (?!) and others too.

that's depressing but I block that out.

Top selling for me yrs ago is $1600 and drop by Forsythe Lubrication on Chatham St but asked if u can view this painting I won 1st prize.

I will post other event soon. I will read all the RTH news shortly...
