Raise the Hammer
We All Got Lost is the story of five school girls (Jessica Pellicciotta, Kaitlin Race, Emily Meados, Evelyn Barber and Miranda Cooper) that is written and directed by Camille Inston. The girls, who are part of a religious school in Northern Ontario, form a storytelling club that is very much verboten. Think Dead Poet's Society.
The stories are retellings of familiar tales with a school-girl twist. There's a lot of theatricality to the stories, and their retelling makes good use of the stage.
Through the course of the regular storytelling meetings, there's a very tragic event, which I will not reveal, and someone falls in love. Both these devices of love and tragedy help move the plot forward. However, this seems to be a world without deep consequences or clear causes. I've never been to Northern Ontario, so maybe that's the way it is.
The acting throughout the show is good. Pellicciotta, Race, Meados, Barber, and Cooper work well together as an ensemble, and no one really upstages each other.
Notably, this play was the winner of the 2019 Hamilton Fringe New Play Contest, which alone may be reason to go see the show.
