Raise the Hammer
Any play that can tackle issues of biblical history, the fate of the universe, rape, the problem of evil, and the afterlife all in a short twenty minutes and still be funny is definitely worth seeing.
The set is a simple office with an intercom. Kate McArthur's character (who we eventually learn is the fabled Lilith from pre-Eve Garden of Eden times) is in a tizzy with an audit looming and extra work being crammed down her throat by the company.
As it happens, this company is an afterworld entry point to greet and deal with souls (imagine Beetlejuice without the interesting costumes).
The central issue that drives the plot is the realization by Lilith, Cain, and the Devil, that a certain something has not been dealt with in accordance with their policies and with an audit upcoming, they are not looking forward to the consequences.
Ryan Terry as Cain works well with Kate McArthur in what turns out to be a very twisted romance. The Devilish Julius Cho provides good humour as a rather charming Satan who is actually a lighthearted office administrator.
Nonetheless, it is really Kate's masterful performance as Lilith that truly makes the performance worthwhile. She very effectively demonstrates an intense personal struggle with keeping secrets (over thousands of years in this case).
Overall, "Ashes to Ashes" is very enjoyable and highly recommended. It was mentioned that they may eventually add an act to it, which I can imagine working well as there is a lot of material covered in this action-packed 20 minutes.
