Environment Hamilton has posted a video documenting air pollution from ArcelorMittal Dofasco over this summer.
In September 2009, ArcelorMittal Dofasco launched their Blue Skies Air Quality Action Plan improve air quality in Hamilton, saying, "ArcelorMittal Dofasco and the Ontario government have a mutual goal of improving air quality in Ontario."
According to a September, 2012 Environment Hamilton report [PDF], "The plant is emitting high levels of the potent cancer-causing substance benzo(a)pyrene, among other hazardous pollutants of concern."
The group calls on Hamiltonians to contact the Ontario Minister of the Environment minister.moe@ontario.ca to express their concerns.
(h/t to CATCH for highlighting the video.)

Looks like making money to me. The cost of making steel for your bicycles and LRTs.

You can't have lived in downtown Hamilton for very long. The smoke = $$ has been a fraud for decades. Among other things it shows inefficient metals production. Go take a tour of the mills some time.

Making money does not have to have this kind of impact on the environment.
There are ways to upgrade their facilities to eliminate many of the contaminants currently being emitted - they just don't want to spend the money to do so all at once - instead they have these plans to phase in "improvements" over the longer term, until eventually, one day, they hope to meet the provincial emission limits.
