Raise the Hammer
Emergency response workers arrived at the corner of James St. S. and King William St. at 1:00 PM today in response to a fire in the Lister Block.
Flames were not visible from the outside, but smoke billowed out of the rear (east) side of the building, and the main floor was smoky where firefighters broke through the plywood that covers the King William St. entrance.
Tahid (last name not provided), proprietor of neighbouring restaurant A Taste of Taj Mahal, reported seeing two teenagers run out of a service entrance at the back of the Lister building.
The fire appeared to be on the ground floor, and did not seem to be serious.
The Lister Building has been in the news lately. Its owner, Labourers International Union of North America (LIUNA), has applied for a heritage permit to demolish the building and replace it with a new construction. City Council has until June 28 to reject the application.

The building was wide open since 2 weekends ago now. Last summer when it was open for 2-3 weeks, the fire in the Tait Gibson store happened. Now this. Happens everytime a ground floor entrance gets opened up.
Although they're probably going to raze the building to the ground anyway, I wish the city would properly seal the building up. One of these times its not going to be a little fire.
