Transportation for Liveable Communities has taken the data from the Shifting Gears Cycling Plan, recently approved by council, and mapped it out on an interactive Google Map.
The map of 223 city and 49 rural projects can be found at tlchamilton.org.
"We decided to make the map available online so people can see where the new bike lanes and multi-use trails will be and think about how the new routes can be used in their day-to-day routines. We encourage people to pick up the phone and let their councillors know that they support the plan," says Nicholas Ellens of TLC.
"Cycling is a healthy, clean, efficient, and affordable alternative to driving. The cycling network, once in place, will enable a large fraction of the population of Hamilton to get around the city safely by bike. A connected network of lanes, paths, and in some places bridges will make cycling in the city a much safer option, overcoming a major obstacle that discourages many from participating," says Ellens.
Research indicates that an increase in bicycle infrastructure results in higher rates of bicycle commuting (City of Hamilton Cycling Network Strategy). As Hamilton adds bike lanes, more people will be able to make a shift away from automobile dependency.
The online map details each project outlined in Shifting Gears, including the type of facility, a line mapping of the route, and a cost projection.

This map updates the previous version by showing all the planned projects on one map, rather than divided over two pages in the former version. It also includes a few projects that were missing from the previous mapping that needed clarification from city staff to get the right routing.

Anyone know why googlemaps insists on calling the Claremont Access the "Clarence Access?"

Looks good! I just finally had a chance to look the whole thing over. I was trying to come up with my own amateur-type plan, but this one looks way better than mine!
Great Job!
Now, hopefully our Bike Lanes get implemented before Scooter Lanes (but the way things look in this City, I'm not too confident)
