Over the past few weeks, RTH has been plagued with intermittent slowdowns and occasional time-out errors. This is frustrating to me because it coincides with a steady run-up in page views since mid-summer.
Technical staff at our hosting provider suggest that the problem is related to high overall traffic on the server, and are moving the site to a a new server with less traffic. (I recently had to upgrade to a more expensive hosting plan with a higher monthly bandwidth limit.)
I'm told that the transition should take place over the next 24 hours, but that it should not interrupt site access or involve any downtime. In any case, if you experience any problems accessing the site, please be patient and try again in a little while.
Unfortunately, this is not the permanent move to a new open source platform that I've been promising; but I have accelerated my rewrite of the code base and am making some good progress on that front.
In the meantime, this move should speed up the site's response time and alleviate some frustration.

How expensive? Have you ever thought of putting out a tip jar?
On the "tip jar" idea, this is one of the (very few) sites that I'd make a Paypal donation to, if there was the option to do so.

There's no shame in that at all to cover expenses. Other bloggers do it to support themselves (not that there's anything wrong with that, it's kind of like busking). No reason not to do it to cover costs.

I've had good experiences with Webfaction. Low cost, reliable. I also get the impression that they're good people there.
