Open City

City Crime Data by Ward, Month, Neighbourhood and Crime Type

By Ryan McGreal
Published September 24, 2009

As part of an article I'm working on, I've been compiling crime statistics for Ward 1. I'm basically grabbing the numbers by month, neighbourhood and crime type from these PDF reports on Councillor Brian McHattie's website to insert into a database table in the following form:

year month ward neighbourhood crime count
2008 3 1 Kirkendall Break & Enter 8

The data comes from Sgt. Jo-Ann Savoie, the Ward 1 (or "West Town" in police parlance) crime manager. Apparently each ward has an assigned crime manager who works with the ward councillor and neighbourhood associations to address crime and safety proactively.

It occurs to me that this could be a valuable resource for the entire city, and I confess to be inspired by Vancouver's open data platform.

Unfortunately, the City of Hamilton has not yet committed to an open, accessible data platform and I don't have time to go hunting down PDFs for each ward of the city and then manually extracting the numbers - so here's my proposal:

If you are willing to grab the data for your ward and email it to me in a spreadsheet or CSV file, I'll add it to the table and make it publicly available.

The data will be available here: http://raisethehammer.org/data/city_crime_stats.asp.

Note: right now the data for May 2009 are missing. I have asked Sgt. Savoie if she can provide them. Update: Sgt. Savoie has helpfully provided the May 2009 data, and they are now included.

Make sure to post a comment under this blog entry to let others know which ward you grabbed so that someone else doesn't accidentally duplicate your efforts.

I'd love to see a comparison between wards Ryan. I've always wondered just how much more crime there is in the "Dangerous" areas of town, of if it's all perception.

it seems a little clever for a bot.

but it is still comment spam.

Regardless of how it was posted, its clearly spam and as such should be removed and the IP that registered it should be permanently banned. You have to take a hard line when it comes to board spam.

Trying to think what the best bets are for finding that information other than councillors and the currently-useless city websites.

Perhaps by contacting the crime managers for each sector within each division? (which includes different neighbourhoods?) - even if one or two get back, they may have an idea of where to find that information.

I sent an email to Sgt. Hayward asking how we can get a hold of the information from the "Down Town" area (Central and Beasley neighbourhoods). I figured I should post that fact here so no one else emails him and we end up bombarding the poor Sargent with emails. What I sent is below and I'll post any response I get from him.

Dear Sgt. Hayward,

My name is Ryan * and I'm currently involved in an online collaboration with other Hamiltonians to compile and present actual crime statistics for the various neighbourhoods in the city. The hope is to provide an accurate, non-biased source of information about crime here in Hamilton. It was started with Ward 1 because Councillor McHattie currently posts the reports submitted by the Crime Manager for West Town on his website, ( http://www.brianmchattie.ca/page2.php?id... ), but unfortunately the information for any other neighbourhoods has not been made easily available to the public and our effort has been stalled. You can see what was done with the Ward 1 data at this link, ( http://raisethehammer.org/blog.asp?id=15... ).

As the Crime Manager for Downtown I was curious if you knew how I could get copies of these reports (or even the raw data) for the two Downtown neighbourhoods you are responsible for. It would help our efforts tremendously and help to replace some of the long held myths about crime in this city with facts. Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Regards,

Ryan *

Of the three main Divisions (each with subsectors), I've just got a file with all the Division One statistics (for year-end 2008 and some current ones) from Sgt. Chris Zafirides (with some help from Sgt. Savoie as well).

Here's the map of the divisions http://www.hamiltonpolice.on.ca/HPS/Comm...

I'll email the files over to Ryan (and anyone else who wants it).
