Raise the Hammer
A letter published in today's Spectator recommends "tearing down one (or both) of two empty, decaying behemoths: the Lister Block and the Royal Connaught Hotel" to build a new sports stadium downtown.
I think this is a great idea. Obviously, we can build half the stadium on the Lister Block site and the other half on the Connaught site. Think of the awesome field goals!

Obviously a ridiculous letter...which begs the question: Why did the Spec print it? Hasn't the Lister saga been resolved? Isn't building over the site no longer an option? So why would the Spec print a useless POV like this?

Obviously written by someone whose only acquaintance with downtown is through the Spec's own coverage, so it's all conflated in his/her fevered mind: LISTERNAUGHT! TEAR DOWN! TEAR DOWN! TEAR DOWN! I'm surprised they didn't throw City Hall in there too.

Why not stick it where those vast parking lots off of Rebecca and John are? Must be more than enough room there, and its already flat. Put in a couple levels of underground parking and maybe a parking building nearby, and the lost parking spots are recovered. Sure would be better than the eyesore that is the concrete field of cars.

It can only be the wildest of paranoid speculation to suggest that, as community leaders, editors and publishers at The Spec published this letter to make the idea of a suburban stadium accessible only by highway seem like a viable and rational alternative.
There is nothing to support this idea whatsoever.
