An RTH reader provides some history on the Buchanan family.

I think the attendant at Doors Open was mistaken about the John & Augusta building. I'm pretty familiar with the historical documents and all accounts indicate that the Buchanans first lived on Henry Street (now Cannon) at or near James St. North, before transferring to Auchmar.
Also, Buchanan was never knighted. And (just to be picky), I believe the Scottish Auchmar is a relatively modest country house and that Buchanan Castle (which burned down about the time Buchanan bought the land where the Canadian Auchmar was built) had passed out of Buchanan hands by that time (about 1852).
