If you ever get a chance to visit Copenhagen or Amsterdam or Utrecht or Malmo or Antwerp or Paris or one of the other great cities for cycling, I urge you to pay close attention to what is happening on top of the heads of the people riding bikes. Almost no one is wearing a helmet, and yet these are the safest cities for cycling on earth, with by far the lowest rates of injuries and fatalities.

A bike helmet is not a safety solution. The only way to make cycling safe is to provide safe, dedicated and protected space on our public rights-of-way. It absolutely is victim-blaming to point out that a cyclist was not wearing a helmet without also pointing out that the city failed to provide safe cycling facilities on the street.
