No doubt this past municipal election race has been a nail-biter for residents all across the city, but nowhere was it closer than in Ward 11. With Brenda Johnson edging out incumbent Dave Mitchell, a new leaf has been turned for the residents of Glanbrook.
Johnson is solid on many issues. She holds a strong, positive position supporting local businesses instead of the big box store corporatism of Dave Mitchell. She is also supportive of local farmers and is not one to be lobbied by the developers of the AEGD.
I think she is a real, significant improvement on the stale politics of Mr. Mitchell. I wish her the best as she steps in the right direction to represent the people of this community in the next four years.

Don of CATCH once remarked about Ms Johnson, "There she is a transit advocate who has never taken a bus anywhere" So much for her credentials!!!

At Dubbya...so? I'm a transit advocate and never stepped on a city bus? Does that mean I shouldn't be one? Stupid!!

Frank: "At Dubbya...so? I'm a transit advocate and never stepped on a city bus? Does that mean I shouldn't be one? Stupid!!"
Boy talk about mean-spirited. I was only reporting on a conversation and get called stupid?!
There is such a thing as 'walking the walk' Frank; or shall I say "riding the bus" on this one....if you advocate but don't use it's like saying "do as I say, but not as I do" which spells hypocrisy. Hypocrite!!!!

First, I'm really happy to see Brenda Johnson elected for ward 11. Perhaps it's too late, but maybe she could help create more of a community feel in the proposed development at 50/QEW. Maybe something like a local market for all the area farmers to sell their goods.
As for Dubbya... Yup, I'll agree with Frank that your comment seems stupid. In fact, I think it's worse that just stupid. It' short sighted, mean spirited, and unproductive. Your response to Frank solidifies my thoughts.
Using Dubbya's flawed logic of "if you advocate but don't use it's like saying "do as I say, but not as I do", a person would have to use heroin before they can advocate for helping heroin users. Or that in order to advocate for gay rights, you better be gay or at least tried it out to see what it's like. Dubbya, perhaps you should call Warren Buffet up and tell him what a hypocrite he is for helping out poor people. I mean, the guy hasn't even been poor a day in his life, and there he is... trying to help out poor people. Sheesh!

Dubbya, another reason that your comment seems "stupid" to me is because of your demonstration of poor logic.
You seem to imply that just because someone hasn't ridden a bus, all of their credentials mean nothing. That's a non sequitur if I've ever seen one.

It probably has a lot to do with where she lives (no HSR service?)
I don't use HSR much because the bike is faster, yet still I advocate for it.
By winbrook (anonymous) | Posted October 27, 2010 at 11:37:22
there is no stopping the QEW/50 Rd development. She is advocating for a transit terminal there, with possibly GO, CoachCanada, HSR.
she is calling for hsr to binbrook & winona as well.

Hey, if she can get expanded HSR service ANYWHERE (binbrook, Winona, Waterdown, stoney creek) she's got my approval.
Let's make this a more equal city so everyone feels like they share in its successes and failures. If everyone has something to lose, everyone has something to gain from working together.

I think having progressive councilors in the suburbs of the city is probably even more important than having them in the inner city wards. Or at least as important. Somebody has to put some strain on these "developers". They've had free reign over our suburban wards for far too long now.

Winbrook,
I know there is no stopping the 50/QEW development. I know it's going to be full of box stores no matter what. What I meant to suggest is that maybe there is a way to slot in a spot for a community market as well as all the already planned stuff.
I'm worried about the transit hub. I really hope that it comes to Winona, but I'm worried that maybe GO will focus more on Casablanca because they already have that GO parking lot there. And there is this http://www.niagarathisweek.com/news/arti...
I'm worried that GO will decide to put in a station at Casablanca instead of at 50. I hope Brenda Johnson can really push to get it put in at 50!

Matt, i think it is equally important since we need to reign in the developers but also need inner city councillors who are actually addressing the needs of their constituents especially where poverty etc is high. I could never understand how a councillor like say Morelli in Ward 3 could support Aerotropolis when so many of his constituents live in poverty and are unemployed and even if a job or two pops up in that nightmare development it will not help them now or even later as they would have no way to affordably get there.
By highwater (registered) | Posted October 28, 2010 at 13:42:17
If you want to know how Morelli could vote in favour of the aerotropolis, you need look no further than his donors list.

So very true. I'm speaking about the last two comments.

Does anyone know the status of the 50 road big box plan?
What is happening with the HPD appeal to the OMB?
Speaking with one of the Grimsby aldermen, Casablanca is the preferred choice for the GO transit hub, so that kind of sucks for us. Although for different reasons, Grimsby politicians are also unhappy about the 50 road box plan.
By SpaceMonkey (registered) | Posted October 30, 2010 at 20:44:35
Henry,
The big box plan is a done deal. Construction is set to start in Spring/Summer according to David Mitchell and an article in the Stoney Creek news.
That is really disappointing to hear about Casablanca. I hope our local politicians here in the Hamilton area will fight to have it put in at 50 rd.

Bit lost here?
Originally Enviroment Hamilton was opposed and filed appeal to OMB re Walmart at Centenial and South Service Road, how does a proposed development go from being bad enviromentally to good enviromentally?
How does a group who's focus and reported knowledge flip flop? What changed on the formeer Waxman lands at Centennial?
The lands are still the same! the proposed development is essentailly the same yet they withdrew their appeal at OMB?
What changed? Other then a supposed meeting with property owners and developers and donations to their cause? Did our enviroment get bought out?
