Butani Launches Campaign Website

By RTH Staff
Published June 28, 2010

Mayoral candidate Mahesh Butani has launched his campaign website:

The campaign website does not yet reveal Mr. Butani's platform, but it does make mention of a concept he calls InnoHa!, or "InnovateHamilton: {a renewed state of spirit, leading to...} sustainable rejuvenation + {made-in-Hamilton solutions} for economic and cultural rebirth."

The page also includes the following bullet list of priorities:

  • Create new jobs and develop new forms of work across all urban, suburban & rural communities.
  • Introduce incentive based sustainability tools to lower taxes and promote relevant growth.
  • Accelerate local & foreign direct investments to spur economic, cultural and transit sustainability.
  • Develop innovations in planning, zoning and by-laws to promote a sustainable quality of life.
  • Lay the foundations for a sustainable eco-city and develop infrastructure for a clean-green economy.
  • Build innovative education and cultural institutions in the lower city through private investments.
  • Implement public accountability tools for system-wide transparency and operational efficiencies.

Butani states that he will provide more updates as the campaign progresses.

For a second I thought that said "Borelli launches campaign website".

Comments so far seem strangely off topic. :-p

What a weak comparison. Kuruc and Kurac do not sound the same at all. It's amazing how one letter can make a huge difference to a word. It seems jejune to even engage in the practice of comparing words that have 80% of the same letters.

Zookeeper can take care of the trolls.

Mahesh, love the website and the ideas to rebuild brand Hamilton.

One question - did you purposefully choose a 20 year old skyline shot of downtown or was that unintentional? Don't get me wrong, I love the shot you chose. Sadly, one needs to go back that far to get an image with office tower lights fully on in Stelco Tower and the top floors of Century 21.

That photo alone gives proof of our need to rebuild our city's brand. Snag a photo of Hamilton's skyline tonight and you'll gasp at the lack of office lights you see.
No, Stelco Tower wasn't knocked down. It's just hard to pick up in current night photos since it's pitch black every night....just like the sky.

It's funny.. "artword".. you attack an OUTSTANDING WELL RESPECTED individual in the community by specifically writing his name, yet you don't give your name???

Be a real "person" and state your name, then you might not be classified as a sad pathetic jealous scum bag that you are now.

It's disappointing that the conversation is being hijacked by someone making personal attacks about someone not even involved in the campaign. The comments appear to be coming from someone unstable and they take attention away from the point of the article. Hopefully, they can be removed from the string.

Seriously, what the fuck is going on here? It's absolutely disingenuous to level this kind of venom without identifying who you are. Anonymous trolls are one thing, this is an unprovoked personal attack and it does a disservice to everyone who comes here to engage in a meaningful discussion. Whoever you are, you should be ashamed of yourself. Grow the fuck up.

Dave has my total support. He is one of Hamilton's true visionaries, and a rare example of Hamilton-born youth who not only choose not to view their hometown with disdain, but remain and choose to work to make it better again. This attitude has spread to many others, creating something sorely lacking in Hamilton: optimism. This makes any attack on him personally all the more sad... who doesn't want some optimism in their city?! As for the banal and pathetic (and misguided, and frankly etymologically incorrect!) 'linguistic insults'.... really, that's all you can come up with? Baš bijedno. Criticizing is easy, personal attacks even easier.... offer an alternative if you think you can do better, but I'm guessing that's not an option for you.

Dave and Ryan, We are appalled that someone has hijacked our name and is spewing defamatory attacks on individuals under a moniker that might be mistaken for Artword Artbar. I think those comments should be removed from the site. Ron and I at Artword Artbar have committed ourselves, our energy, our experience, and all our personal resources into helping make the James North community flourish. We are there in part specifically because of Dave Kuruc's enthusiasm and dedication to Hamilton. And I definitely think you should reconsider allowing anonymous comments.

It's sad that this clearly progressive forum is also a place where hate and slander are prevalent. Someone should probably do something about that. Also, I completely support Dave, his business and I am very grateful for the work he has personally put into revitalizing James Street North.

More importantly; this is the first information I have seen on Butani, and I must say, I'm impressed. A mayor with with his achievements and background could be very beneficial to our city. I'm glad I got passed the word "developers" in his bio before brushing it aside.

This is simply not true. Hate and slander are the exception here, and the overwhelming downvotes make it clear what the community thinks of those types of comments. I haven't checked out the other thread yet, but I would hate to see the open comment policy here changed because of aberrations like this.

"Trying to morphing"? Have you a grasp of this language called English, "Artwords"? Or, sorry, your name is actually "Moreartwords" is it? oh, no I see it's "Hmmm". How profound. You have the gall to call Dave a "self-appointed community builder hero". The only 'self-appointed' anything around here is you. You are a self appointed bile spewer. You are gutless enough to remain anonymous, yet you don't even stand by your own ill-penned words strongly enough to maintain the same alias. You typify old school thinking in this city. Shoot anyone who tries to change things. Of course Dave and Teresa have a business to run, selling art supplies in their shop constitutes that business. How is that a bad thing? If you don't like the prices, talk to them. They are extremely approachable people.

When you further reveal your ignorance by labelling Dave "non inclusive, pretentious and unsophisticated and narrow-minded" it's obvious you don't know him at all. I have never met anyone as inclusive and unpretentious as Dave Kuruc. I assume you are describing yourself. Come on, gutless wonder, who are you? You are a hurtful, self-indulgent idiot. What have you contributed to your community lately? Dave has never EVER described himself as a community hero. The Spec is the Spec is the Spec. Why vent your spleen on the subject of their articles, instead of on the writer of them? This reeks of jealousy. Get out and do something constructive for the people you purport to represent "we were right" - is that the royal "we"? The hilarious thing about your pathetic comments is the effect they are having in actually galvanizing support for Dave from those who have bothered to get to know him. Well done!

Also, to Matt and Dave, thank you for drawing my attention to Mahesh Butani. I had never heard of him and have now read his bio. He too sounds like the sort of hand-on person who likes to get things done in this city instead of bleating on about others' apparent failings. Dave - don't let the imbeciles get you down.

Yvonne I love your passion but feeding trolls like these only encourages them. Hamilton is terrified of change and people like Dave Kuruc who are leading the change to a more progressive, more inclusive city are going to be the target of attacks from the desperate rearguard. Don't let them hijack the conversation, Mahesh's candidacy deserves better than for us to waste the comments complaining about a few (probably just one) haters.

The new comment voting feature is great. Even if a comment is heavily down-voted, it is still easy to read with one click.

With regard to the "Kurac" comments above. This is the type of comment you should feel free to remove without any explanation.

"dick" is one letter removed from duck, dice, tick, dock (i am sure there are more). so it seems Kurac is not that offensive after all.

If we take the posters name 'Artwords' and take the first and last letter, we almost have Ass. 'MoreArtwords' = More Ass.

I guess I should check out the campaign website now!

I dig the Dave but it ain't all gravy and I too grow wary when they start handing out prizes. I mean, good to have the work recognized and appreciated but when the dude goes iconic you gotta wonder what the image will be used to sell next, and who's doing the selling, the icon or the icon-maker. Gotta be careful not to stop thinking about the work and not just about the icon.

As for that dickhead stuff, who cares really? It gets spread around and doesn't come to much of a point. What happened to Mr. Butani? Is he going iconic?

If you check back on your posts and the various topics over the last year or so, you would see that RTH has violated this rule of decency on numerous occasions by vilifying or having vilified those it disagrees with!

'RTH' is not the borg. It is possible that some individual users have misused the down button simply to express disagreement, but downvoting is hardly 'vilifying'. It's ridiculous to accuse an entire site of "violating the rules of decency" just because a few folks are a little hasty with the down button. Oy vey. I think a little perspective is in order.

1990 >> "Mahesh, love the website and the ideas to rebuild brand Hamilton..."

Thank you for your comments 1990! Glad you liked the ideas presented so far.

About the skyline shot of downtown, there were two options I had; the one selected had more to do with a personal choice of imagery and aspect ratio of the photograph, rather than an analytical decision on my part viz year of shot, or the lights in Stelco Towers etc.

Glad you brought this up — as it gives me an opportunity to introduce a topic from my soon to be released specific initiatives.

With regards to the lack of office lights in our high-rise buildings and its resulting less dramatic nightscape — given the hydro costs and impact of light pollution, I would say, it would only be prudent to switch the lights off at night, even after all the high-rise floors are fully rented.

The days of shimmering night time city skylines resulting from leaving office lights on all night, are sadly past.

The new aesthetics of sustainability driven by green energy will eventually set a different direction in city nightscapes which may be equally compelling, but quite different than the ones we are used to presently.

As research in the field of urban ecology grows, we will start to see dramatic changes in the way we think of cities — and the way we make use of artificial lights in our cities.

There are many studies done on the Ecological Consequences of Artificial Night Lighting, that are well worth a read for those interested in knowing more on the impact of artificial light on urban ecology — and for those considering artificially lighting our natural habitats including the many waterfalls on a long term basis.

well, let's at least get some LED lights to light up Stelco Tower so it doesn't look like a gigantic movie set all year long. LED's are peanuts to operate and can have a dramatic effect on sprucing up a skyline.

Great post Mahesh, I can't wait to see your platform!

I agree the nightline is dimmed by eco-reasoning.
I am certain there are other ways to prettify this city at night.
Activities bringing in other people from the horseshoe would be best.
Mr. Butani. Were you in Hamilton 20 years ago?
I think you are not from around here.
What brought you here and what makes you want to run for office?
If brief, what is your history with Hamilton?
Katrina.
