That this assessment is frank and candid doesn't surprise me one bit. American planners are often quite clear about American motives and the consequences of American policies. The problem is that the media tends to ignore these assessments, and the administration never listens to them, let alone publicizes them.

Vice Admiral Thomas R. Wilson, Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, reported on future challenges facing the US, including that:


Other [people], either unable or unwilling to share in the benefits of globalization, will face deepening economic stagnation, political instability, and cultural alienation. These conditions will create fertile ground for political, ethnic, ideological, and religious extremism. For many of those 'left behind,' the US will be viewed as a primary source of their troubles and a primary target of

their frustration.
