McGuinty must guarantee Hamilton LRT cash: Horwath

QUEEN'S PARK - NDP Leader Andrea Horwath today called on the McGuinty government to allocate the funds needed to get Light Rapid Transit (LRT) in Hamilton up and running.

Horwath demanded to know if funding for LRT in Hamilton is being delayed as a result of the $4-billion in government cuts to Metrolinx, the provincial agency responsible for overseeing transit projects. "We know that badly needed transit lines in Toronto are being mothballed as a result of these cuts," she said during today's Question Period.

"Hamiltonians are understandably worried that their city's LRT plan will meet a similar fate. Hamilton can't go ahead with its plan without provincial approval and funding," she stressed.

Hamilton's LRT would bring huge benefits to the city by reducing commute times, cleaning the air and sparking economic activity, not to mention getting athletes and spectators to the upcoming Pan Am Games, noted Horwath.

"If construction doesn't start very soon, the lines won't be ready in time for the Games," she said.

The Premier should do the right thing and guarantee that Hamilton's LRT money will flow this year.
