Raise the Hammer
The race starts in rural Hopkinton, MA, and winds its way through the western suburbs to Boston. Some of the marathon's most dramatic moments occur between mile 20 and 21, when the aptly named Heartbreak Hill rises a steep 80ft. It's all downhill from there.
Runners cruise up Beacon St, through Kenmore Sq, down 'Comm Ave' (Commonwealth Ave), over to Boylston St, and into a triumphant finish at Copley Sq. This final mile is among the most exciting places to be a spectator.
